Serving the Congregation . . .
Aesthetics Plans and coordinates the addition of furnishings, pictures and decorative items throughout the church building; works with the Building Committee. Organizes and sets up the sanctuary for the holiday season.
By-LawsExamines new proposals regarding congregational policies and practices for possible non-compliance with existing By-Laws provisions and, where required, to draft appropriate corrective amendments for the consideration of the Board and the congregation.
Canvass Plans and coordinates the Annual Canvass to support our operating budget. The pledges and contributions of our members and friends are our congregation's only source of financial support (other than fundraising). The Canvass Committee plays a crucial role in ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to support the congregation in a way that enables us to realize our visions as a congregation. Caring Coordinates support for members and friends in times of personal crises and need.
Denominational Affairs Serves as liaison with the Unitarian Universalist Association and the Unitarian Universalist District of Metro New York.
Finance Works with the Treasurer and other lay leaders to maintain the financial health of the church; prepares the annual operating budget for the congregation; works with the Canvas Committee on the annual canvass; maintains pledge records; and helps everyone better understand financial stewardship.
Fun Organizes and runs intergenerational congregation activities; Fall clean-up, Getting to Know UU dinner, Thanksgiving Luncheon, New Year's Eve Party, Talent Zone, Forward Looking Dinner, Shelter Island Retreat.
Hospitality Coordinates and plans for Sunday morning greeters; provides coffee and refreshments following Sunday worship services . House & Grounds Responsible for improvement and renovation of the structure and the surrounding grounds and gardens. Organizes and schedules work days. Manages rental of building space and coordinates with congregational use.
Membership Provides membership and denominational information to potential and new members; assists new members and friends in assimilating into the life of the congregation; is present at the Visitor's Corner every Sunday; updates our Members/Friends Directory; coordinates new member Sunday.
Ministry Works to strengthen the quality of ministry within the congregation; serves as a communication channel between the minister and the congregation; members are elected by the Board of Trustees from a slate put forth by the the minister.
Newsletter Publishes the Monthly "Advance" Newsletter.
Nominating Provides slate of nominees to fill church leadership positions; members are elected by the congregation.
Publicity Works to spread the word about the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Central Nassau and what we do.
Religious Education This committee, along with the Director of Religious Education, plans and implements the church school program from pre-school through high school. It also provides childcare for infants during Sunday Service. Religious education offers children creative interaction with oneself, with others, and with nature. (see RE page) Members are elected by the congregation and appointed when a vacancy occurs.
Social Responsibility Provides channels for interested members to work on social issues and problems.
Worship Arts Plans, organizes, and oversees Sunday worship when the minister is absent from the pulpit; arranges for guest speakers; provides assistance with all worship services; liaises with Music Director to plan and implement programs.
